Obama tightening Mexican border security

mexican-border-illegalOne thing I never quite understood about President Bush is that he was so staunch on stopping terrorist on the other side of the earth but he never took a strong stand on Mexican border security. The virtual fence was a meager attempt at controlling illegal immigration, but has many critics that believe it will never do the job correctly.

Today, President Obama has laid out a plan to beef up security at the Mexican border. Recently, there has been a dramatic increase in violence near the Mexican border led by drug cartels. With the violence beginning to spill over to the United States, I think it is about time our President took action to protect our national security. In the plan, President Obama plans to increase National Guard troops and other personnel present at the border and also equip them properly with helicopters and improved technology. This all comes a day before Hillary Clinton heads to Mexico to discuss and support the crackdown on drug cartels.

The Modern Whigs believe in a strong national defense and I think the Mexican border is essential to our security. Not only do we need to control illegal immigration, but the increased violence and kidnappings stemming from the drug trade must be stopped. Kudos, President Obama, for making this stand.

  1. In 2005 we traveled extensively along the border and took photos of several sites where military style cameras were positioned along the roadway looking for illegals crossing, In all but one case, there was cardboard and bedding underneath each with jugs of water and trash about the area. It appeared that the “electronic” eye platforms were being used as shelters. We confirmed this with multiple sources. From that point forward we gave up on Bush and Republicrats.

  2. Thats right, I think as Whigs we have to come out for border enforcement, I love the Mexican people (I lived among predominantly immigrants communities in South Chicago and speak fluent Spanish) but we need to prevent border violence and prevent the possible influx of illnesses into the US, not to mention protect American workers from the influx of cheap labour.

  3. this is crazy the people that run this country do’nt have a clue poor people from mexico are only here to make a living my family come from mexico and some of them almost died to be in the GREAT LAND OF THE FREE U. S. A. SO I TELL ALL YOU PEOPLE WHO THINK “WET BACKS” SHOULD’NT BR HERE TRY LIVING LIKE ONE FIRST AND TELL ME HOW YOU FEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Maggie, I hear your pain and that of other immigrants. You have my heart felt sympathies. I understand the reality of the troubles immigrants face having lived in Texas all of my life. As I kid I played with the kids of immigrant families and even learned to speak Spanish. So the Mexican-American community is close to my heart.

However, there is no need to inject racism into this equation. Because at it’s core, this isn’t an issue of race. It is a straw man with a measure of truth behind it. We know that racism is alive and well within the fringes of the Republican party. I know that at least for my self race is not an issue. Nor do I think it is for the majority of my fellow Whigs. You are an American regardless of the color of your skin.

The problem we have have is with illegal immigration. The reasons we have such heavy regulations on immigration are various and sundry. Among them, there is the criminal element. With the drug trade comes waves of criminals and violence. These people never go through the proper channels and therein lies the problem. We can’t keep track of the bad apples.

The other big problem is that with an influx of cheap illegal labor comes an increase in the number of Americans who lose their jobs to migrant works. This is also a huge detriment to the Mexican-Americans who came here legally and who pay their taxes.

It’s not immigration we have a problem with. When done properly integration of immigrants into American society contributes to the diversity of our great melting pot and strengthens us as a society. It’s truly a shame that race ever entered the equation. But this is not anything new. Italian and Irish immigrants all faced the same discrimination when they came here at the end of the 19th century. Even legal immigrants were often harassed and pelted with rocks as they got off the boats.

Immigration control exists to protect Americans of all races, religions and creeds. Try not to be so hasty in judgment against those of us who want what’s best for all us. We don’t need to be enemies.

  5. Oky, where do i start, my mom crossed that border 19 years ago. Not really wanting to go, being forced by he exhusband. My mom was yes a beaner and all very poor, but made it to America. She had me and my 4 sisters years later. my mom really struggled to get a job and take care of her 5 kids. I as an Mexican/American say yes it was wrong how she snuck into the us, but really she had no choice. maybe if the Mexican laws werent to strickt on what you need for a Passprot, not so many people would sneak in. My mom paid top dollar for a lawer to be able to get a Passport but no good came from it.

  6. i hate mexicans and they should come over legally, you stupid beaners.
