Veterans paying for healthcare? Not gonna happen.
Mar 29th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: Obama, Veterans Affairs |It came to my attention here that some people interpreted my report card of Obama’s speech as an assessment of what he is actually doing. As I mentioned in the article here, my aim was to assess only what he said in his speech. That said, there have been reports of President Obama trying to force veterans to pay for their healthcare in order to save $540 million dollars. This proposal has been called ludircrous from both Democrats and Republicans, and the bill would have no chance of passing the senate. Zip, zilch, zero, nada. It will never happen. Taking benefits, especially something as vital as healthcare, away from veterans is a big political no no. And for a good reason. Asking the men and woman who put theirs live on the line for our country to pay for wounds they have received in service is just ridiculous.
While it was only a “consideration” by the Obama administration, this proposal does show the apparent distaste of the President for the military. This is in stark disagreement with what he said in his speech and I think as Americans we will need to keep a close eye on what this administration attempts to do with veteran affairs. If the administration ever championed such a bill, I believe it would be the end of his political career. While veteran affairs are dear to the Modern Whigs, all Americans across the nation support our troops regardless of political affiliation. So as the title says, veterans paying for their healthcare is not gonna happen.
Thankfully this went public and was quickly struck down. IMO this was the dumbest idea of the century so far.
[...] It appears President Obama is putting his money where his mouth is when it comes to veteran affairs. Obama has pledged $25 billion in spending for veteran affairs over the next 5 years. His major goal: to produce a unified electronic record system between active military and veterans. There is currently a 6-month backlog for disability claims because of a difference between the electronic records for active military and veterans. This is a good sign after a worrying report that President Obama was going to force veterans to pay their own healthcare. [...]
