Jumping ship from the GOP, Specter shows weakness of GOP (and an opening for Modern Whigs)

Apr 29th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: Modern Whig, Republicans

As anyone reading this already knows, Arlen Specter (R D, PA) bailed on the Republican party and is now a Democrat. Considering he was projected to lose the Republican primary because of his support of government bailouts, this reeks more of desperation to keep his job rather than an inspirational awakening. In his defense, he has always been a moderate Republican. However, the bold and respectable move would have been to run as an Independent rather than outright joining the Democrats.

Bailout cop might be wrong approach to improving investor confidence

Apr 21st, 2009 | By Mike | Category: AIG, Issues, TARP

Neil Barofsky is being nicknamed the “bailout cop“. His job is to oversee the $700 billion in TARP funds being used to prop up failing companies. I can understand some regulation of TARP funds as we have already seen some instances of abuse such as AIG throwing lavish parties immediately after receiving TARP funds. So [...]

Modern Whig Party Mass Meeting, April 24th 2009

Apr 18th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: Mass Meeting, Modern Whig

During the run of the historic Whigs, luminaries such as Abraham Lincoln organized “mass meetings” to build the party from the ground up and gain mainstream support. In that tradition, the Modern Whig Party continues to host such events for our thousands of members. Gatherings have already taken place in numerous places such as Missouri, New York and Texas, as well as substantial online venues. Deployed service members also have quietly organized meetings. In fact, our next mass meeting is set to take place in Washington, DC.

Tea Parties against increased taxes as tax cuts are showing up in paychecks

Apr 15th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: Stimulus, Taxes

Today there are TEA parties occurring across the nation. People are upset about bailouts, taxes, and socialism. TEA stands for “Taxed Enough Already”. Only one problem with this criticism: Obama just cut taxes. My last paycheck put an extra $50 in my pocket, and I didn’t get a raise. Republicans have again distorted the facts to instill anger to their supporters. This is not a strictly Republican tactic, Democrats do it as well, but this is a great example of why people need to do their own homework and stop listening to 10-second soundbytes on mass media.

President’s Economic Address, April 14th 2009

Apr 14th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: Issues, Obama

If one thing is clear, it is that President Obama has a plan. Watching his speech, he shows that he has studied the problems our nation is facing and has a plan that aims to reposition our country as a world leader in education, scientific advancement, and economic growth. I don’t agree with all of his methods, but I do enjoy a President who has a clairvoyant idea of what he is doing and is sticking to his guns to get it done. Through all of the criticism, he has continued to push his agenda and does very well communicating how he plans to do it. His plans revolve around 5 pillars, so I will go through each one by one.

Obama pledges money to veterans, wants to bring electronic record system in to 21st century

Apr 9th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: Veterans Affairs

It appears President Obama is putting his money where his mouth is when it comes to veteran affairs. Obama has pledged $25 billion in spending for veteran affairs over the next 5 years. His major goal: to produce a unified electronic record system between active military and veterans. There is currently a 6-month backlog for [...]

A case in point, Gingrich calls Obama ‘anti-religious’

Apr 8th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: Republicans

After posting today about the Republicans pandering to the religious right, Mr. Gingrich reinforces my criticism by calling the Obama administration “anti-religious” for putting an Harry Knox, a former methodist pastor and openly gay activist, on the advisory council for faith-based initiatives. The board consists of 25 members, and Mr. Knox will be the only [...]

Iowa, Vermont, and DC recognize gay marriage

Apr 8th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: Gay Marriage, Modern Whig

With the addition of Iowa and Vermont, four states now recognize gay marriage. There hasn’t been much discussion in the Modern Whig world pertaining to gay marriage. Because the party believes in social progression, I would assume many members of the party would support recognizing gay marriage. As for my personal opinion, I am a part of the “what my neighbor does in his/her home does not affect me” mantra, and I think anyone from the LGBT crowd should be able to marry whoever they want. It doesn’t affect me one bit.

North Korea tests missile, time to disarm?

Apr 6th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: International Affairs, Obama

Over the weekend, North Korea tested a missile which could reach as far as Alaska. Testing their first nuclear weapon in 2006, the news of a missile test sent shockwaves around the world. President Obama was quick to condemn the test, but then went on to use this as a springboard for his agenda of disarming the world of nuclear weapons.

Obama’s World Tour

Apr 4th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: International Affairs, Obama

After finishing up at the G20 summit on Friday, President Obama is now in Strasbourg, France for the 60th NATO summit. The President is holding his ground at the big boys and girls club.
However, it is a bit ironic that the leaders who attended the G20 summit were so positive on the future of the [...]
