Iowa, Vermont, and DC recognize gay marriage
Apr 8th, 2009 | By Mike | Category: Gay Marriage, Modern Whig |With the addition of Iowa and Vermont, four states now recognize gay marriage. There hasn’t been much discussion in the Modern Whig world pertaining to gay marriage. Because the party believes in social progression, I would assume many members of the party would support recognizing gay marriage. As for my personal opinion, I am a part of the “what my neighbor does in his/her home does not affect me” mantra, and I think anyone from the LGBT crowd should be able to marry whoever they want. It doesn’t affect me one bit.
However, as strong supporters of state rights, the Whigs might also take the stance of leaving this decision to individual states. While I don’t agree with this personally, I don’t expect a political party to be exactly what I believe but close enough. My problem with banning the marriage of LGBT people is that the opposition is based completely on relgious beliefs. The reason I could never join the Republican party is that they cater directly to the religious right and make decisions such as banning gay marriage to please this portion of the electorate. I think many of the Republicans-turned-Whig have also become tired of this practice. In fact, I think this is what caused the demise of John McCain. I know lots of democrats here in NYC who would have voted for McCain before he sold out to the Republican base. The attraction of the Modern Whig Party for myself was the combination of fiscal responsibility and social progression. I am curious to hear how others in the party feel about this, so please comment.
Would the full faith and credit clause require that states that ban gay marriage recognize a marriage conducted in a state such as Vermont or Iowa? I think that would solve that issue.

Of course my mind wonders to the quandry this puts the military in. With current policies, and knowing the tendancy for weird activism what happens when a married gay or lesbian hits the recruiting office or a service member marries then demands BAH with dependants?
